| Custom License Plate Obtained |
Project Skywarn with new license plate.
L ike a lot of "custom" cars and trucks, Project Skywarn has obtained its own special license plate. While most would wait until the project is completed, we could not. Since this is a working unit, while it is being created, the license plate was ordered as soon as the title was transferred to us.Like most states, Texas gives you the ability to purchase various forms of license plates for your vehicle. They even have started allowing some highly customized plates to be create. Some of the more traditional custom plates have been related to being ex-military, former POW, college, farm vehicle and others, include Amateur Radio. In Texas, any currently licensed Amateur Radio Operator may obtain Radio Operator license plates with their call-sign on them. The state has a special form that you download and print out and submit it along with a copy of your FCC license that shows the call-sign on it. The only requirement is that the vehicle is equipped for mobile amateur radio operations. A unique note about these license plates is that you can own more than one set. You may place a set on each of the vehicles you own that have amateur radio equipment in them. Since this project truck is owned by Kaufman County ARES, Inc. and we have two call-sign's, it was determined to use the organizations original call-sign for the license plate. The Radio Plates will cost us an extra $1 per year and it is now paid at the same time as the registration renewal. In the past, your plate and our registration were paid separately and possible at different times of the year. Now Texas has changed the way they handle these plates and have made it a lot easier to pay for them. You can read more about this story on the Kaufman County ARES website. When the project is completed, we will have the plates replaced if they have become damaged or unsatisfactory to our goal.
