Welcome to Project CERT and Project ARES.  This is an effort to create 2 ultimate vehicles to be used by local Community Emergency Response Teams and an Amateur Radio Emergency Service® program to help with their operations within their communities and to help promote these programs nationally.

Project Skywarn Truck Obtained

The video was created using a basic digital camera with video mode as a test of making a video and editing it on our computer.  This shows images of our project truck as it sits before the update begins.  Currently, they Dodge contains a basic 2 meter mobile amateur radio and a LED dash light for current spotting operations, magnetic skywarn markers and other items.

As this project truck moves forward, Kaufman County ARES, Inc. plans on turning it into a highly mobile storm spotting/emergency communications platform.  There are many upgrades that are planned for this project and they will all be incorporated as the build moves forward.  While we would like to do a complete off the frame restoration, at this time, that will not be possible.  This truck will be used on a daily basis, while it is being turned into the ultimate storm spotter vehicle.  Once the initial transformation has taken place and if we are at a point were it can be taken out of service, it will be rather easy to remove what we have added and complete the underside restoration of the vehicle.

We have many plans laid out for this project.  From working on the engine to having the vehicle repainted, to adding new amateur radio equipment and emergency lighting.  We will show what we are doing with each step of the build.  This will include videos, photos and detailed information about what is being done.  While we have been asked why use such an old truck for this project, it makes perfect sense, since parts for these olders Dodges can be found pretty easy, they are heavy duty, built in the old style manner, which makes them better able to handle the rough operations we are expecting to put it into, and we just plain like it.

For an idea of some of the things we will be doing, we have included a basic list of items that we wish to take care of before this project is completed.  Our goal is to have all major projects completed before the end of 2009.  While we have seen a similar project done to built a volunteer fire fighters vehicle, they took over 6 year to complete the project, but since this is a department owned emergency response vehicle, we wish to get the job done as quickly as possible, while keeping the truck in service as long as possible.
